Going, Teaching and Baptizing

"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Matthew 28:19 "

"Go" --we've certainly been going a lot between our home and Delft and Northpine for the past year. We've traveled almost 10,000 kilometers for ministry in our 1996 Toyota Venture. We thank the Lord for safety on the roads as we've traveled alone, together and with others--We've even traveled with a large rain spider! This spider crawled out one Sunday as we were unpacking the vehicle to set up for the service at the classroom in Delft.
"Teach all"--Since January we've taught nearly 200 discipleship or mentoring classes and almost 50 Bible club lessons and 28 classes on purity and the gospel at the public school. Recently Jacoba (in pink on the second row) asked for prayer, saying she doesn't have assurance that her sins are forgiven. Pray that we will have the joy of seeing her trust the Lord along with 1-2 others who may not be born again. The Lord is using His Word in the lives of those that Caren (below) and I teach each Thursday and in the lives of those that June, Jeremy and I teach on Sunday afternoons.
"Baptizing them"--Pastor Kevin asked Tony to preach at the "gemeenskap aanddiens" (fellowship evening service) last night. Afterwards, held a baptismal service and rejoiced in the baptisms of these believers:
Brandon, Jason's brother, (being baptized, below)
and Chris, who trusted Christ in our home in late June 2008,
Oriel, who trusted Christ in Tony's study on 15 September 2008,
and her husband, Bradley, who was saved the same evening Oriel was saved,
Lungile, Toby, who was saved at a young age (baptized by his father),
and Dany, Toby's brother, who was also saved at several years ago.

Genadendal Getaway

"Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest awhile. Mark 6:31"

Late in September, Isaac and Sheila Balie had dinner with us before their departure to Europe where he had opportunity to minister in three countries. On October 16, we traveled to Genadendal in order for Tony to minister there in Isaac's absence. We arrived on Friday afternoon to enjoy a little rest from our busy routine in the Cape. That evening, while I tidied the kitchen of the Balie's guest house and Tony went over his message, we were surprised by the arrival of guests since we thought no one knew we were there! The Gertses, long time friends of the Balies, came to make our acquaintance. We enjoyed several hours of fellowship over tea with this godly couple. The next day Iris stopped by to bring me flowers and on Sunday, Tony posed with John in his lovely garden when we stopped to greet them on our way out of the village.

The Saturday of our Genadendal Getaway, Tony and I started down this lovely path for a morning's hike. We thought were traveling the right way. Even when we came to a shallow riverbed, we continued on because we could see that the path continued on the opposite bank. After a brief attempt to place large stepping-stones in the water, my gallant husband decided to make quicker progress on our way. In true knight-style, he got his own feet totally submerged sloshing through the current with me on his back! On the return, after we discovered we were NOT on the right trail at all, Tony spent more than a half an hour building a footpath of large stones, so that I (and others who may later pass that way) could pass over with dry feet. (If I write Tony's biography someday, could I call it: A BUILDER OF BRIDGES? :-) When we'd retraced our steps, we located the correct footpath, which was narrow, rocky and steep! But we were rewarded with beautiful views when we reached the summit. It was worth all the toil and trouble! So it is with our Christian journey. The glories of heaven are not to be compared with the light afflictions we endure here.

On Sunday, the 18th, I took this photo from the doorway of the meeting hall, during the singing before Tony's message on labouring for God's approval from Matthew 25. Unfortunately, the photo doesn't show the faithful group men who make up about half of the assembly, because the men sit at the front and along the right wall of the meeting hall. During Tony's message, I had the privilege of sharing a Bible lesson with these 20 children. Jason and Cedric preached in Eindhoven and in Northpine the Sunday we were in Genadendal.

October Overview

"Redeeming the time . . . . Ephesians 5:16

I realized this week that I hadn't blogged for almost 4 weeks. When I looked through the photos we'd taken during October, I understood why I hadn't blogged!!! It's been TOO busy!!! Below is an overview of the first 2 weeks of October excluding Tony's preaching ministry and our 6 different weekly discipleship/mentoring classes, and the three weekly times of visitation (Sunday afternoons, Wednesday mornings and Wednesday evenings).

The first of the month, Caren, June and Vivienne and three of their children joined me for a hike at the Tygerberg Nature Reserve. We plan to hike here again in December when we take the two Bible clubs--the one in Northpine that meets at Caren's and the one in Eindhoven that meets at June's (below)--on an end-of-year outing.
After Bible club on Sundays, the children in Eindhoven like to pile into our Venture for a ride around the block. (Never mind the smudged windows from heads and hands or the sandy footprints on the floorboards!) Few of these children ever ride in an auto. Many of them attend the monthly fellowship night hosted by Pastor Kevin Simpson at Immanuel Baptiste Kerk in Eersterivier. Last month they enjoyed the opportunity to sing before Tony brought the message.

Morne, Jason's friend from high school, attended the Bible study in Eindhoven the first Thursday in October. After the lesson, Tony shared the gospel with Morne. Morne understood the claims of Christ, but unfortunately he is not yet prepared to turn from his sin.

The first Saturday in October, we welcomed Amy Blackburn back for a visit after her emergency trip to the USA to visit her hospitalized grandfather. Early Monday morning, Amy, Jason and two other young people hiked with me and Tony up Table Mountain from Kirstenbosch Gardens.Unfortunately, Amy and I had to turn back halfway up when her blood sugar gave her some unpleasant issues, but Tony, Jason, Brigitta and Joshua had a great climb to the top and back down again.

On the 11th, the B_____'s joined us for Sunday dinner. After the meal, when Tony talked to Wesley and Bronwyn in the study, Bronwyn trusted Christ as her Saviour. What a joy to hear her testimony when they later came into the lounge. The next Friday evening she shared with the discipleship class at Cedric and Caren's that she had trusted Christ.
The next day Jeff and Judy Blanton, who work in Mitchell's Plain, came for lunch. Judy enjoyed watching our "son" Jason eat!! Jason frequently sleeps over on Sunday nights and spends all day Monday with us. (below, Jason with 2 of Caren's children) That afternoon, Judy and I were working on Sunday school literature in preparation for their furlough next year, when Caren and the children dropped by for a visit.

On Tuesday, the 13th, Tony enjoyed a visit with Jack, now a "retired" builder, who had helped with the church building in 2005-6. Jack traveled to the Western Cape to see family. He is using his retirement years to serve the Lord in evangelism and in training believers in the Northern Cape. One of our goals is to train and influence national workers, like Jack, toward ministry and methodology that is wholly Biblical.

Hospitals and Hospitality

"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction." James 1:27
"Use hospitality one to another without grudging." I Peter 4:9The men of Calvary Bible Baptist Church and Eindhoven Baptiste Kerk gathered in our home on 5 September for a joint prayer breakfast. The time of challenge was followed by a full-fledged farm breakfast which Cedric, Tony and I prepared before their arrival. I finished up scrambling the HUGE skillet of eggs just as the message that Bro. Leon brought was completed. After the meal, the men paired off to pray together.
The next week, we hosted BWM missionary, Amy Blackburn, before she flew out on an emergency visit to her grandfather in a hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. The day of Amy's departure started very early for Tony and me, as I checked in the Durbanville Medi-Clinic Hospital for surgery. We were very thankful to receive a good report from my gynecologist, Dr. van den Heever, when he discharged me later that same day.
Thembisi and Lungile (above) set up an appointment for some counsel. We spent the afternoon of the 12th listening, counseling and praying with them. They began attending Calvary Bible Baptist this year and comment often that the Word has been ministering to their needs.
The Eindhoven Baptiste Kerk church family gathered for the Heritage Day (Erfenisdag), the 24th, for a braai (barbecue). Below, Jason's dad, Clive and Tony man the braai. Even though Clive is recovering from surgery to his right shoulder, he wanted to braai! The men enjoyed sharing this tableWhile the children were served at the round table, the women ate in the lounge where everyone later gathered for a time of singing and a devotional followed by tea and cake. We had lunch with our "daughter" Liz (below), a master's student at the University of Western Cape on Friday, the 25th. We encourage her continually to recognize God's lovingkindnesses to her throughout her years at UWC and to seek Him with all her heart. From the University, we traveled to Tygerberg Hospital, one of the largest teaching hospitals in the southern hemisphere. We went to visit Hannes, to whom Tony has witnessed for almost 10 years. He was hit by a truck on the 6th when he collapsed on the road during an asthma attack. He sustained fractures to his skull, left shoulder, right arm and all his ribs! But God spared his life and used the 3 weeks in hospital to draw him to Himself. While visiting Hannes, we learned that he had received his discharge orders. Tony offered to take Hannes home, so while I waited for Tony to bring Amy's car to the hospital entrance (since our car was being used by a believer who was moving), I noticed a young man in a nearby room peering from behind a curtain around his bed. Since the nurse was busy with Hannes,I stepped across the passage to introduce myself, but the 18 year old hesitated to even whisper his name. He showed me his armband, which simply read: "Unknown." He'd been in hospital 5 days after being shot below his sternum, through his spine. Because of the danger of further attack by his assailants, his name doesn't appear in the hospital's patient registry. When I asked him why he'd been shot, he sadly shook his head. I then asked, "Was jy in die verkeerde plek met die verkeerde mense besig met verkeerde dinge?" (Were you in the wrong place, with the wrong people doing wrong things?) He nodded. I asked him what would have happened to him if he'd been killed and then shared the gospel with him. I left him a tract, some scriptures and our phone number. Pray for this young paraplegic's salvation.
Hannes' wife, Aletta and their children, Janine and Jay-Jay were all smiles when he came home. Pray for God to use this near-tragedy in their lives. Janine and Jay-Jay are still lost though they've heard the gospel often at Immanuel Baptist Kerk.

Promoting Purity in Public School

"Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body, but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. I Corinthians 6:8"

Last year and again this year, we've been teaching a life skills course on purity at the public school where our church, Eindhoven Baptiste Kerk, meets. This year we've had the opportunity to influence over 150 grade six learners in three Afrikaans medium classes and in one English medium class with the message of the gospel and abstinence. Each Friday we spend 3 hours teaching these 11-14 year olds that God's plan for sex is one man with one woman in the covenant of marriage for a lifetime. Tony, Jason and I teach them the importance of making good choices and the consequences of bad choices. We will have two more sessions this month before the school's spring break begins. At the next session, we will give these young people the opportunity to sign a commitment card to save sex for marriage. Pray for the testimony of the gospel to be concretely planted in these young hearts and for God to draw some to salvation. In a culture, where promiscuity is the norm, they will need the grace of God to live purely. We are very thankful for the support of Mev. Assur, the teacher who is the grade head. Her comments have been most encouraging. We are also encouraged when we enter the school gates to hear a learner call out to us one of the mottos(shown above) we've been teaching them. For example, the translation of the top left motto is: "You win or lose by the way you choose, so decide to decide right!"

A New Convert and Two New Contacts

"No man can come to [Jesus], except the Father . . . draw him:" John 6:44

At not quite 9 a.m. on Thursday 23 July, a light rain was falling when two women knocked at our door. They had walked at least 4 kilometers to come to our home. Tony and Jason's coffee and sandwich basket was beside the front door, because it was time for Tony to leave to make visits with Jason. I dried my hands and left the sinkful of dishes. After I'd made coffee for my unexpected visitors, I sat down at the kitchen table and asked the younger woman what had brought her to our door this morning.
The older woman,Willa (shown below with her husband, Jan), is a faithful member of Immanuel Baptiste Kerk (IBK) where Pastor Kevin and Sister Lydia Simpson are ably leading that flock. For years, Willa's youngest daughter, Margaux, has been on the prayer list at IBK. Margaux answered my question and told me that she'd come to a crisis and a crossroad. While we were still at IBK, we had witnessed to Margaux and plead with her to leave the life she was leading, but this particular morning God was drawing her to Himself. It was a rare privilege to share Christ with someone who knocked on OUR door. It was a joy to hear her pray and confess her sins and place her faith in Christ. We are thankful she is attending IBK and we are praying for God to grow her there.
Leonard, one of the faithful core at Eindhoven Baptiste Kerk, has been bringing visitors. One Sunday last month he brought Faiza and her young children. Faiza has returned to visit the services several times. When Tony and I stopped by to visit her two weeks ago, we met her husband, Allistair. While I talked to Faiza in the kitchen area of their one room home, Tony sat on the bed with Allistair and shared the gospel with him. Faiza shared with me about her difficult childhood. They lived on the streets and her mother died while she was young. Allistair's eyes filled with tears while Tony witnessed to him. The following Sunday, Allistair was in church and heard the gospel again when Tony preached from John 4 on the woman at the well. Jason, Tony and Jeremy have all made follow-up visits. Recently, Jason offered to teach Allistair to read. We are praying for him to be converted and learn to read the Word of God.

Training Servants

"Make disciples . . .teach them . . . "(Matthew 28:20)

One of the joys of discipling is seeing disciples grow in serving and ministering to others.
In the work in Eindhoven, Jeremy and June have made their home a center for reaching neighbours and their children. Each week the Bybelklub meets here as well as a discipleship class. June is being trained in children's work. Her love for children is what God has used to draw this group together. Andre, from the Northpine ministry, is also using his gifts while being trained in Eindhoven to work with children. Jeremy continues to witness door-to-door, lead services. He is preparing messages and has opportunity to preach about once a month.
Another spiritual sponge that we are privileged to be training is Jason (below, in middle between Jeremy and Reagan). At just 20 years of age, he is demonstrating great potential. He has a sincere love for God, the Bible and souls. He visits door-to-door with Tony each Wednesday, teaches at the public school outreach each Friday, helps Jeremy clean and set up the classroom for church each Saturday, alternates with Jeremy leading services, preaches monthly, and teaches in the Bible club twice a month. What a joy to have such a spiritual "son" in the faith!

In Northpine, Calvary Bible Baptist Church is blessed of God to have Cedric and Caren Pillay. Cedric maintains all the administrative aspects of the work and leads the services, while Tony in preaching through the Sermon on the Mount during Eric Graham's year of furlough. Caren comes to me weekly for a mentoring class and together we hold a Bible club in their home each Thursday. We are thankful for this young family's love for the Lord and their selflessness in service to Him and the local assembly. Last month we enjoyed an outing together seeing the penguins and last week we spent an LONG night together when their 4 year old daughter went to the emergency room and was admitted with a high fever. Thank the Lord for His protection in these days of the H1N1 pandemic in the Western Cape. (I finally got the last 4 photos for this posting to load! :-)
