Using Nursing to Advance the Gospel

"And of some have compassion, making a difference:" Jude 1:22

We often have the opportunity to reach out to people with physical needs. This month the mother of two young ladies in Northpine had some health issues. We were able to minister to her in the hospital and I also followed up with some home visits. Using my nursing knowledge has been the door to open up a friendship with Patience. She believes God has given her a second chance in life. Pray for her to understand the gospel and trust Christ alone for eternal life.

Last year, we met Willie while going door-to-door in Eindhoven. Then this year, I met Felicity while a teen and I were passing out invitations. Felicity asked if I would visit her mother someday. When we called on Willie and Felicity this month, her mother was away, but they asked us to have coffee with them. While we were there, I was able to help with a number of their questions about their medications and I also took their blood pressures. Felicity said God sent us that day to be an encouragement to her before being admitted to hospital for surgery. We stopped by today and learned that she will be discharged soon. Pray that the Lord will lay it on the hearts of these professing believers to visit Eindhoven Baptiste Kerk.
Sidney's 41 year old wife, Maureen, had a stroke recently, so when Jeremy and Tony shared the gospel with them one Sunday afternoon in July, they were already doing a lot of thinking about eternity. Tony offered to have me come take Maureen's blood pressure. This allowed us to have another opportunity to share the gospel with them. They have promised to visit the church, but casual weekend work, Sidney's only employment, has kept them from keeping that promise.

During the winter (July) school holiday, we learned that some of our Bybelklub boys made a Hookah pipe from a Coke bottle and some rubber hoses. Below is an imported Hookah pipe for sale in a local shop for around R200 ($26). I researched the pipe and prepared a lesson for the children to warn them of its dangers. While parents in Delft believe it to be a harmless practice, research has proven it to be 200 times more dangerous that smoking a cigarette. I began by showing a picture of the pipe. I asked if anyone knew what it was. The ones who began to tell me "ALL about it" were the ones who were experimenting with it! But no one knew how dangerous it was. The fruit-flavoured tobacco that is smoked in the hookah causes nicotine addiction. Due to the lengthy smoking sessions and the deeply inhaled water-cooled smoke, the incidence of mouth, tongue, throat and lung cancer is much greater among hookah pipe smokers that among cigarette smokers. The warm, moist, dark lumens of the pipe's hoses are breeding grounds for TB, meningitis, herpes and other communicable diseases. We hope to see God convince these children that their bodies belong to Him. How we long to see them live their lives for the glory of God.

We're also back in the school this term teaching the dangers of immorality and the spread of HIV. All these ministries are doors for sharing that Christ alone is the answer to our sin problem.
